Day of Live Archaeology on 6 October 2019

27.09.2019
Neues Museum

On Sunday, 6 October 2019, “Day of Live Archaeology” takes place both inside and in front of the Neues Museum on the Museumsinsel Berlin. Together with the Stadtmuseum Berlin’s Düppel Historic Village (Museumsdorf Düppel in Berlin-Zehlendorf), the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte (Museum of Prehistory and Early History), Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, is providing interesting insights into the work of archaeologists and offering visitors a diverse programme to take part in.

Insights, Hands-On Activities and Talks with Professionals

A display showing a dig demonstrates how urns from the Iron Age are excavated. Interested visitors can also help construct a well and learn how to spin wool. Live archaeotechnology ‒ the demonstration of ancient techniques and handicrafts ‒ can be watched in the warping of a loom from the Neolithic Period. Carving harpoons from antlers is another participatory craft on offer to visitors.

Interactive stations in the special exhibition Berlin’s Largest Excavation: Research Area Biesdorf trace how archaeologists reach their findings and conclusions. Curator’s tours through the exhibition are offered at noon and 2 pm, and at 3 pm coordinator Anita Fuchs will speak about the participatory youth project “Exploring Biesdorf”.

Day of Live Archaeology is realised by the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in cooperation with the Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin – Museumsdorf Düppel.

The Exhibition: Berlin's Largest Excavation. Research Area Biesdorf

During preparation works for the construction of new buildings in Biesdorf, a total of 22 hectares of land was excavated between 1999 and 2014. This uncovered evidence of 10,000 years of settlement history along the small river Wuhle that runs through Biesdorf.
