Gemäldegalerie
The catalogue Netherlandish and French Painting 1400–1480 will be presented at 7 pm on Thursday, 20 March 2025 in the Gemäldegalerie at the Kulturforum Berlin.
The Gemäldegalerie of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin is home to an internationally renowned collection of early Netherlandish and French paintings. Its holdings provide a one-of-a-kind insight into the revival of European art that began in Flanders in the 15th century that is unparalleled by any other museum collection.
This first ever scholarly catalogue of the collection holdings includes artworks by members of the first generation of painters – in other words, those artists who commenced their painting practice in the second third of the 15th century at the latest. The catalogue showcases 69 individual paintings in 52 entries. All of the great masters of the era are featured, many with key works of art, such as:
All of the entries on the artworks in question are based on art-historical and technological research methods in the field of painting and were produced in the framework of an interdisciplinary collaboration. Lavishly illustrated, they offer a wealth of new insights into both the better-known works in the museum’s collection and those that have otherwise previously received less recognition.
