The colonnade courtyard is the winner of the 2011 Deutscher Lichtdesign-Preis. The prize, which is announced each year, was awarded in the category of 'outdoor lighting/illumination' to Conceptlicht GmbH, designers of the impressive lighting scheme.
The colonnades' distinct character on the Museum Island is emphasized by the warm shades in which they are bathed. By contrast, the illumination of the façades of the surrounding buildings is characterized by a choice of cool light, similar to that of moonlight. As the stone and brick façades gradually become indistinct at night, the programmed illumination counters this by casting more coloured light onto their surfaces.
