Closing Event on 22 November for “Beyond Compare: Art from Africa in the Bode-Museum”

18.11.2019
Bode-Museum

Completing its two-year run, the exhibition Beyond Compare: Art from Africa in the Bode-Museum is closing soon; a week later, the exhibition Connecting Afro Futures. Fashion x Hair x Design will close at the Kunstgewerbemuseum. Curators at the Skulpturensammlung, the Ethnologisches Museum and the Kunstgewerbemuseum review the two shows in a panel discussion.

Since October 2017 Beyond Compare: Art from Africa in the Bode-Museum has been exhibiting outstanding African works of art from the Ethnologisches Museum in juxtaposition with works from the Sculpture Collection housed at the Bode-Museum. Since August 2019, with the show Connecting Afro Futures. Fashion x Hair x Design, the Kunstgewerbemuseum at the Kulturforum has presented fashions by contemporary African designers, who have responded to works in the Berlin Museums.

Now, in a panel discussion at the conclusion of Beyond Compare, curators from both institutions of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin are taking stock: Which concept was pursued with each exhibition? How did viewers respond? What will be relevant for future exhibitions?

Hermann Parzinger, president of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz
