Catalogue, Extract and Booklet for the Exhibition “Atmoism – Gestaltete Atmosphären” at the Kunstgewerbemuseum

20.01.2021
Kunstgewerbemuseum

The exhibition catalogue Atmoism – Gestaltete Atmosphären was published in September 2020 to accompany the eponymous exhibition at the Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Decorative Arts). In 194 pages, it documents the first major solo exhibition on designer Hermann August Weizenegger. An extract and the booklet accompanying the exhibition are now exclusively available by download.

Inspired by the “soft, brutalistic” spatial atmosphere of the Kunstgewerbemuseum’s architecture ‒ designed by Rolf Gutbrod in 1967 ‒ the designer developed 24 artistic interventions with affinities to stage sets. They express themselves as sculptures, material compositions and staged objects that function like a net cast throughout the museum’s permanent exhibition. This creates an atmospheric tour, which opens a dialogue between the museum and his objects. Taken as a whole, the interventions Weizenegger created reflect a design vision of future product(ion) scenarios – situated somewhere between human input, artisanry and medium-sized production industry.

More information on the 24 interventions (in German) is included in the booklet accompanying the exhibitionAtmoism – Gestaltete Atmosphären (PDF, 2.6 MB).

The designer’s 24 artistic interventions also structure the catalogue. Varying text formats convey the fundamental design philosophy and framework that Weizenegger used to develop the exhibition, as well as interesting background information about design and production processes behind the individual exhibits. The catalogue includes text contributions by Claudia Banz, Thomas Wagner and Patricia Ribault.

The extract from the exhibition catalogue Atmoism – Gestaltete Atmosphären (PDF, 3 MB) is offered exclusively via download. It provides initial insights into Hermann August Weizenegger’s atmospheric works.

Claudia Banz edited the catalogue for the Kunstgewerbemuseum – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Published by the VmfK Verlag für moderne Kunst. In German, 194 pages, 20.5 x 27 x 2.5 cm, hardcover, ISBN 978-3-903320-97-0, 35 euros.

The exhibition catalogue is available online through the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin Webshop.
