On Thursday, 13 March 2025, at 8 pm, the Kunstbibliothek (Art Library) – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin at the Kulturforum opens the new Buchsalon (Book Salon), which, of course, is all about books. A talk with artist Eva-Maria Schön launches the series.
At the Buchsalon, Maren Wienigk, curator of the Architektur und Ornamentstichsammlung (Architecture and Ornamental Engravings Collection), and Michael Lailach, curator of the Sammlung Buchkunst (Book and Media Art Collection), talk with guests about new and old books. Admission to the events is free; drinks are available.
The event series on books focuses on their ideas and concepts, designing and printing, and publishing and collecting. What future awaits books – in the library and the world of readers? What role will books play, and in which form? How and why does the book cosmos continue to assert itself in the digital and AI-influenced world?
Berlin artist Eva-Maria Schön has literally discovered the breath and hand for her current work as a draughtswoman. Traces of exhalation and the abrasion of a hand remain visible in her drawings, finding their expression in book form, particularly in the fanfolds of the Leporello.
The programme of events at the Buchsalon highlights the special connection between books and art: What new creative spaces does the book offer artists? What can unfold and unfurl within this context? What particularities characterise the interaction with books? What significance does the book presently have – as art, as a resource for researching art, and as a means of disseminating images? And how important is the book’s design? How do the visual and applied arts shape the medium of the book? What impact do books have on both the design and historiography of architecture? How do art publishers plan their programmes? Which processes underpin the collaborative production of books?
