Kunstgewerbemuseum
Join us for the opening of the exhibition Connecting Afro Futures. Fashion x Hair x Design at the Kunstgewerbemuseum on 23 August 2019. The exhibition introduces a new generation of African fashion designers who are rethinking African fashion and hairstyles. During the opening, two people can have their hair styled by the braiders for free – as winners of a photo competition on Instagram.
The Kunstgewerbemuseum und Fashion Africa Now ask interested participants to join the competition with a photo on Instagram by 16 August 2019. At the opening, the winners will take part in the interactive programme of the Live Braiding Performance with Awa Kalogo and Mariame Faye. More information is available on Instagram or on the Fashion Africa Now website.
23 August 2019, 19 pm at the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Matthäikirchplatz, 10785 Berlin
With Connecting Afro Futures, the Kunstgwerbemuseum is for the first time showing the work of designers and artists exclusively from Africa and of African heritage: Lamula Nassuna, BULL DOFF, Meschac Gaba, José Hendo – Label, NJOLA Impressions, Adama Paris, Ken Aïcha Sy, TONDO clothing, Diana Ejaita – Wearyourmask.
Connecting Afro Futures presents an empowered self-image and a home-grown aesthetic that challenges and side-steps (neo-)colonial thought patterns and beauty norms. The artists and designers were given carte blanche to transform their visions of African fashion and hair into installations for the exhibition.
The exhibition was curated by Beatrace Angut Oola (Fashion Africa Now), Claudia Banz (Kunstgewerbemuseum) and Cornelia Lund (fluctuating images).
Further project partners include: Goethe-Zentrum Kampala, Ugandan Arts Trust and Wakh’Art. Support was provided by the TURN Fund of the German Federal Cultural Foundation.
