Gemäldegalerie
On Thursday 26 September 2024, at 6 pm, the Gemäldegalerie will present the interpretive results report of a two-year art-historical and art-technological research project on the work of the renowned Berlin Rococo painter Anna Dorothea Therbusch. The event will take the form of a book presentation and an evening lecture.
In addition to a selection of essays exploring a range of interdisciplinary topics, the publication also comprises a comprehensive catalogue section that presents those of Therbusch’s artworks that are currently held in the collections of public institutions in Berlin and Brandenburg.
The publication will be launched as part of the symposium Anna Dorothea Therbusch in Context: 18th-Century (Women) Artists in Berlin and Europe, which will take place on 26 and 27 September. International experts will present the latest findings on the artist, as well as further prospects for research.
Journalists who are interested in participating in the symposium can register via the following email address, subject to the availability of remaining places: a.groeger[at]smb.spk-berlin.de
Following the Gemäldegalerie’s presentation in 2021 and 2022 of the monographic exhibition Anna Dorothea Therbusch: A Berlin Woman Artist of the Age of Enlightenment, which was organised in cooperation with the Alte Nationalgalerie to mark the occasion of Therbusch’s 300th birthday, the gallery embarked on an art-historical and art-technological research and book project dedicated to the artist‘s life and work.
The publication in question is the first of its kind to present Therbusch’s paintings in a comprehensive, readily accessible book format. Essays on a range of topics provide fresh insight into the artist’s working methods and use of materials, her life, the themes explored in her artworks, her personal relationships, and the history of her work’s reception. The book also provides an updated overview of the oeuvre of this incredible painter.

Berlin-born painter Anna Dorothea Therbusch (1721–1782) was one of the most significant artists of the 18th century. At a young age, she was already working for clients who had connections to the Prussian royal family. She went on to achieve success in Paris, where in 1767 she became one of only a handful of women to be admitted to the most prestigious European art academy of the day, the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. When she returned to Berlin, she became a portrait painter whose skills were much sought-after by members of high-society circles. She created renderings of mythological tales to adorn the palaces of Frederick II and received commissions from the Russian Tsarina Catherine II.
