28.02.2014
Pergamonmuseum

Dr. Beate Salje, Director of the Vorderasiatisches Museum since 1998, has retired, bidding farewell to the museum in late February. After her course of study at the Freie Universität Berlin, Dr. Salje worked as a lecturer in the Orient Department of the German Archaeological Institute, through which she participated in the excavation of the city of Uruk in Iraq. Of the many high points during her tenure, "Faces of the Orient”, an exhibition about Jordan, and the successful "Babylon - Myth and Truth” - developed in collaboration with the Louvre in Paris and the British Museum in London - rank among the most memorable. Other noteworthy exhibitions include "The Tell Halaf Adventure”, which marked the conclusion of a remarkable restoration project, and "Uruk: 5000 years of the Megacity” in 2013, the first devoted to this important city in the cultural history of Mesopotamia.
