Arrival of the Venetian gondola and Sicilian cart

16.04.2011
Museum Europäischer Kulturen

The first exhibits from the Museum of European Cultures have been transferred to the newly renovated Bruno Paul building. After a break of more than two years and extensive renovation work, the Museum of European Cultures is due to reopen in Berlin-Dahlem in December 2011. The transport of the original Venetian gondola (built around 1910 and approx. 700 kg in weight and 11 m in length) and magnificent cart from Sicily, or 'carretto siciliano', (dating from the late 19th century, measuring 3.40 m in length, 1.60 m in width and 1.80 m in height) marks the start of the installation of the permanent exhibition, 'Cultural Contacts. Life in Europe' in the building designed by Bruno Paul in Berlin-Dahlem.

The new home for the exhibition will have around 700 sqm of floor space to present to the public objects primarily taken from everyday life, ranging from the 18th century up to the present day. The exhibition will also feature various forms of media that together shed light on the discussion on social movements and social barriers. Greater mobility brings with it questions of belonging and identity, both for individuals and groups. The exhibition features important objects that served a wide variety of functions, were made from different materials and stem from different epochs. Forming a cross-section of the diverse collections that make up the museum, the objects come from a broad range of European countries.
