Humboldt Forum
During a ceremony handing over the keys, Hermann Parzinger, president of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, and Michael Eissenhauer, general director, expressed their gratitude to Céline, Heiner and Aeneas Bastian for their extraordinarily generous gift. The building, designed by David Chipperfield Architects and located Am Kupfergraben (a street in Berlin-Mitte), has been dedicated to Modern and Contemporary Art as the Galerie Bastian since 2007. From now on it will be known as the “Haus Bastian of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz” and used as a Centre for Cultural Education.
In the future this centre will do a great deal more than simply providing space for museum visits to be prepared or reviewed. In-depth topics will be explored at Haus Bastian to build bridges between the collections and museums. This process will also include the neighbouring Humboldt Forum, which one day soon will form a unit with Museum Island.
The centre’s programme for young visitors is particularly important. A variety of activities are planned, ranging from workshops, study and project days to lectures, discussion rounds, open workshops and much more.
The building will offer generous work areas and spaces for researching and studying, communicating and discussing, as well as for presenting and reflecting on new experiences. The Department of Education and Outreach / Communication at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz is responsible for the concept for the Centre for Cultural Education.
