Activity Day to Celebrate the Opening of the James-Simon-Galerie on 13 July 2019

The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin is inviting the public to take part in a huge activity day in the new central entry building of the Museumsinsel, the James-Simon-Galerie, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on 13 July 2019. Workshops offer children and families the chance to learn about the architecture of the new building, while exhibition talks for adults discuss the architecture in more detail, and introduce audiences to some of the highlights in the Neues Museum and the Pergamonmuseum. Curators will talk about the significance of the James-Simon-Galerie from the perspective of their various collections. Musical entertainment, a round of museum bingo, along with snacks and beverages will cap off the programme. 

Activity Day – For adults and families alike

  • When: Saturday 13 July 2019, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Where: The James-Simon-Galerie, Museumsinsel Berlin, Bodestrasse, 10178 Berlin
  • Entry: Participation in all activities is free, as is entry to the James-Simon-Galerie. On the Activity Day, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., visitors can gain entry to the Neues Museum and the Pergamonmuseum for the special price of €10 (concession €5). This price does not include entry to Pergamonmuseum: Das Panorama. Children under 18 receive free entry.
  • Registration is not required
  • Accessibility: The building and exhibitions are accessible for people with mobility issues.

This tour looks at the newly constructed building designed by David Chipperfield, at the background story, and at the gallery’s significance for the Museumsinsel Berlin.

Prize

On 25 June 2019, before the building even opened, the James-Simon-Galerie received an award in the German Architectural Prize 2019. The prize is awarded every two years by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI) and the Federal Chamber of German Architects (BAK).
