Academy Lecture Series “Netzwerk Museumsinsel” Available Online

26.06.2020
Museumsinsel Berlin

The German lecture series Netzwerk Museumsinsel is now available on the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin YouTube channel. The lectures are being posted online successively as of 26 June 2020. Katrin and Hans Georg Hiller von Gaertringen present the current series.

The James-Simon-Galerie, the new entrance building designed by David Chipperfield, completes the Museumsinsel. Questions about the right form of access have characterised the history of the Museumsinsel on a number of levels. Connections both above and below ground have transformed several individual museums into a kind of German Louvre. The lecture series considers the topic of access as realized in architecture as well as in its idealised or conceptualised forms. Education programmes and new concepts of exhibition presentation have been and still are being used to contextualise and make accessible the collections’ subject matter.

Netzwerk Museumsinsel is the Academy’s second instalment in its online lecture series. The first segment, Schinkel – Ein Blick in Preußens Blüte (Schinkel – A View of Prussia’s Golden Age) was made available in May 2020. The series of lectures can be viewed online free of charge.

The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin Academy with Open-Air Discussions

Guided discussions and viewings of works of art and architecture take place outdoors this summer. Master builder Schinkel’s architecture is examined on the Museumsinsel and at other sites in Berlin. Netzwerk Museumsinsel focuses on the architecture at the World Heritage Site, from its origins to the present.
