A New Lighting System: Third Partial Closure of the Gemäldegalerie begins 4 October 2022

04.10.2022
Gemäldegalerie

A new, specially designed lighting system is being installed in the Gemäldegalerie, expected to be completed by fall 2023. This renovation contributes to the conservation and protection of the collection, reduces the gallery’s carbon footprint, and improves the aesthetic display of artworks. Reduced overhead lighting, harmonious ambient lighting, and precisely placed light accents on individual works are optimising the presentation of the collection.

Reopening of the Second Construction Section/ End of Second Construction Phase

During the first partial closure from 25 October 2021 to 8 April 2022, the halls of Old Netherlandish and 17th century Flemish and Dutch painting were refurbished. A second construction phase has dealt with the section of 17th-century Dutch painting and 17th- and 18th-century English, French, Italian, and Spanish painting (Halls X–XIV, Galleries 16–26). After the successful completion of the work on schedule, the latter section reopens on 1 October 2022, allowing visitors to experience the paintings in a new light.

Construction Work during the Coming Two Stages

The work required during the next construction phases is expected to be completed by September 2023. During this time, a quarter of the exhibition area will be temporarily closed at a time (see floor plan, PDF, 1 MB).

The third phase of construction includes the galleries of German and Dutch Painting from the 13th to 16th centuries (Halls I–V, Galleries 1–5). These areas will not be accessible from 4 October 2022 until approximately 11 March 2023.

We ask for your patience and understanding during this temporary period of reduced viewing.

A selection of the main works from the second construction phase can be seen in Hall VI and Gallery 6  (see overview of exhibited highlights, PDF, 1,5 MB).
