Gemäldegalerie
A new, specially designed lighting system will be installed in the Gemäldegalerie by autumn 2023. After the first construction phase was completed and reopened on time, parts of the Gemäldegalerie will be closed again in the coming months for the second construction phase.
The second construction phase includes the area of 17th century Dutch painting and 17th and 18th century English, French, Italian and Spanish painting (Halls X–XIV, Galleries 16–26). These sections will be inaccessible from 19 April until approximately 1 October 2022 (see floor plan, PDF, 779 KB).
A selection of the major works affected by the second construction phase will be on view in Hall XV and Gallery 11. There will also be isolated interventions in other halls of the permanent exhibition (see overview of exhibited highlights, PDF, 445 KB).
During the first partial closure from 25 October 2021 to 8 April 2022, the halls of Old Netherlandish painting and Flemish and Dutch 17th century painting were renovated. After the first construction phase’s successful completion, the section was reopened on schedule on 8 April 2022. Our visitors can now view the paintings in a new light.
The installation of the new lighting system serves to conserve the works, increase energy efficiency, promote sustainability and, last but not least, improve the aesthetic visual experience within the exhibition space. The presentation of the collection can be fundamentally optimised by reducing overhead lighting, harmonising ambient lighting and precise placement of accent lights on the works.
The work required during the three remaining construction phases will occur over the next year and a half. During this time, a quarter of the exhibition space will be temporarily closed.
We ask for your patience regarding these temporary restrictions.
Due to the limitations, regular admission was lowered to 8 euros (reduced: 4 euros) on 25 October 2021.
The modernisation of the lighting system has been made possible through the generous financial support of the Adolf Würth GmbH & Co. KG.
