The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s Münzkabinett now has its own, dedicated fundraising and support committee. At the annual general meeting of the Numismatische Gesellschaft zu Berlin (Berlin Numismatic Society), which was founded in 1843, since which time it has served as the circle of friends of the Münzkabinett, the fundraising and support committee was unanimously admitted as a new working group on 23 January.
It constitutes the fourth such working group within the Numismatische Gesellschaft zu Berlin, along with the Freundeskreis Antike Münzen, the Berliner Medailleurkreis and the Arbeitskreis Brandenburg/Preussen. Carl-Ludwig Thiele, a member of the German Parliament from 1990 to 2010 and from 2010 to 2018 a board member of the Deutsche Bundesbank, was elected as spokesperson. In these earlier roles, he was responsible for the German gold reserves, currency, and the Money Museum at the Bundesbank in Frankfurt.
The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s Münzkabinett is the largest numismatic museum in Germany. It employs four curators, who are responsible for more than 540,000 objects, and are involved in organisations such as the Numismatic Commission of the German Federal States, the International Numismatic Council, and other financial bodies.
The new fundraising and support committee hopes to expand the work of the Münzkabinett in terms of acquisitions, exhibitions, research, and the promotion of young specialists in the field, and to strengthen the position of the Münzkabinett within numismatic networks in Germany and around the globe.
