100,000th Visitor Views “Cinderella, Sindbad & Sinuhe” at the Neues Museum

After only six weeks the number of visitors to the exhibition Cinderella, Sindbad & Sinuhe: Arab–German Storytelling Traditions has reached the six-figure mark. The curators of the exhibition personally welcomed the 100,000th visitor.

A large crowd attended the opening of the special exhibition Cinderella, Sindbad & Sinuhe: Arab-German Storytelling Traditions on 17 April 2019, and the interest for the trilingual (German/English/Arab) show has remained very high ever since. Just six weeks later, Giovanna Modafferi (32) from Italy, who came to the exhibition with her husband Antonio Grillo (35), was welcomed as the 100,000th visitor. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers and an exhibition catalogue at the Neues Museum (New Museum) by the curators of the exhibition, Prof. Dr. Verena Lepper, Anke Weber and Sarah Wessel.

The 100 thousandth visitor had travelled to Berlin from southern Italy

Ms Modafferi, who works in the public service in the southern-Italian region of Calabria, was enchanted with the exhibition and its design. She also emphasised the special significance of the exhibition theme: the diversity and commonality of different cultures. Especially in regard to refugees in Germany, she finds it important to “address and show the cultural similarities existing between the Arab and German worlds.”

The Exhibition Cinderella, Sindbad & Sinuhe Arab-German Storytelling Traditions

For the first time the Neues Museum (New Museum) is dedicating an exhibition to the rich cultural heritage of narrative traditions from ancient Egypt, the Arab world and Germany. The breadth of the trilingual exhibition (German/English/Arabic) stretches from ancient Egyptian papyruses to the tales of the Brothers Grimm, from the Arabian Nights to contemporary pop-up books and comics. Some 100 objects from the collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and various lenders shed fascinating light on a 4,000-year-old cultural history.

Cinderella, Sindbad & Sinuhe is a collaboration between the Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung(Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection) of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA). The exhibition has been generously funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Support has also been provided by the Council of Arab Ambassadors in Berlin, the Mission of the Arab League in Berlin, and MDT-tex.

The exhibition can still be visited till 18th August 2019 at the Neues Museum.
