In just two months 100,000 visitors have seen the special exhibition Mantegna and Bellini: Masters of the Renaissance at the Berlin Gemäldegalerie (Old Master Paintings). The show – a collaboration of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the National Gallery and the British Museum in London – compares the oeuvres of the two Italian Renaissance masters for the first time and remains on display until 30 June 2019.
Today Michael Eissenhauer, General Director of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and Director of the Gemäldegalerie and Skulpturensammlung, welcomed the 100,000th visitor to the exhibition: Ina Röttger (48) from Münster and her friend Florence K. (47) from Berlin. Having learned about the exhibition in a newspaper article, the photographer Ina Röttger arrived in Berlin this morning to take photographs at the Gemäldegalerie and to find inspiration for her work. Michael Eissenhauer:
“We are very pleased that this unique exhibition project has inspired not only the media and professional circles but also the general public. I would especially like to thank our international partners, without whose mutual support such a large-scale collaboration would not have been possible – and in the near future will no longer be possible.”
The cultural highlight remains on view at the Kulturforum until 30 June 2019. Mantegna and Bellini: Masters of the Renaissance is the first exhibition to focus on the closely interwoven work of the artists Andrea Mantegna (c. 1431–1506) and Giovanni Bellini (c. 1435–1516). The masters of the Italian Renaissance were friends, relatives and rivals. They inspired, copied and admired each other.
Around 100 works, mainly from the Gemäldegalerie and the National Gallery in London, which hold an unusually large number of exceptional works by the two artists, are currently on display. Enhanced by impressive works on paper from the Kuperstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) and the British Museum, as well as outstanding loans from around the world, the new constellations created by the exhibition provide fascinating juxtapositions.
Due to the high volume of interested visitors, some lines to view the exhibition can be expected.
Mantegna and Bellini: Masters of the Renaissance is an exhibition of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the National Gallery, London, in collaboration with the British Museum. The exhibition is under the patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and is sponsored by the Kaiser Friedrich Museumsverein and the Sparkasse-Finanzgruppe. Media partners for the exhibition are ARTE, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, Der Tagesspiegel, tip Berlin and ZITTY.
