The project The Sami Collection at MEK. A Multiperspective Approach to Provenance Research is organising a workshop at the Sámi Museum Siida in Inari, Finland on 14 and 15 June 2023. Museum professionals from Berlin and the Nordic Sámi museums, other cultural workers and duojárs (Sámi crafters) from Finland, Sweden and Norway will meet for a workshop.
During the workshop, participants will learn about the MEK collection and the different ways of working with it. They will also have the opportunity to participate in the development of the project. The workshop will also bring together the duojárs, who will travel to Berlin in 2024 to study and work with the Sámi collection at MEK. In addition, Sámi researchers and duojárs will give presentations on the significance of the collections and Sámi ways of working with museum-held duodji (Sámi crafts). On the one hand, the workshop aims to gather knowledge in order to create an ethically sustainable model for working with Sámi collections outside Sápmi. On the other hand, the workshop aims to work with Sámi specialists and German museums to decolonise these collections.
