Rathgen Heritage Science Scholarship 2024

The Rathgen Heritage Science Scholarship, which has been awarded annually since 2009, is intended to enable young professionals to undertake their own research project at the Rathgen-Forschungslabor within a duration of 3 months. The deadline for 2024 applications is 29 March 2024.

The Rathgen-Forschungslabor (Rathgen Research Laboratory) with the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (National Museums Berlin) is the leading institution for heritage science in the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation). It researches aging and weathering processes as well as sustainable conservation and restoration strategies for movable and immovable cultural heritage in the light of global change and is an active contributor to the sustainability debate on the Green Museum. It deals with the development of analytical, in particular non-destructive investigation technologies as well as questions concerning the documentation and accessibility of cultural heritage in the digital age. Preventive conservation, art technology and archaeometry are further areas of research.

It carries forward the tradition of the world´s oldest scientific museum laboratory, the Chemical Laboratory of the Royal Museums in Berlin, which was founded on 1 April 1888 and bears the name of its first director, Friedrich Rathgen.

It is the mission of the Friends of Rathgen (Förderkreis des Rathgen-Forschungslabors e. V.) to support the work of the Rathgen-Forschungslabor in various ways, among others by supporting research projects of young professionals in heritage science.
