Cultural heritage is of vital importance to Europe’s identity, an importance that extends well beyond the purely financial value of the cultural objects themselves. Long-term preservation of this cultural heritage, however, requires constant research. This combines the current and future challenges of protecting cultural objects with object-oriented development and experimentation with new methods, treatments, and products, as well as the introduction of these into the broader market.
The challenges facing conservation research are international, such that scholars from different European countries frequently work together as partners to solve current problems. The results of national research projects are in turn shared among colleagues throughout Europe and thus have a transnational effect, fully in keeping with the vision behind the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
In conjunction with the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (German Federal Environmental Foundation) has teamed up with partners from the fields of conservation and restoration, museums, archaeological research, and monument preservation, to attempt both a retrospective survey and an assessment of the current status quo of conservation science. Together with conference participants we would like to illustrate the directions in which conservation research could progress in the future, and identify which topics should form the focal points for future research and funding.
The event is organized in cooperation with the Deutsche Nationalkomitee für Denkmalschutz and the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz.
