Rathgen-Forschungslabor

As part of the EU-funded project Alliance for Research on Cultural Heritage in Europe (ARCHE), on 16 and 17 April 2024, the Rathgen-Forschungslabor of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin is holding the workshop “Resilient Cultural Heritage in Times of Climate Crisis” at the Kulturforum on the challenges that climate change poses for cultural heritage and for broader society, with a focus on research and innovation.

The workshop will consist of four sessions, bringing together researchers, representatives from public administration, from funding and government bodies, together with partners from civil society in order to sketch out existing and future needs of a research and innovation agenda for the sustainable preservation of cultural heritage.

Both days of the conference will be streamed live, meaning that those who cannot make it to the Kulturforum can still participate online. For further information please contact arche[at]smb.spk-berlin.de.

Survey

On the occasion of the workshop, we would like to extend the mapping of the Research & Innovation landscape on Cultural Heritage to German stakeholders. The survey is accessible online and will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

The ARCHE Project

The Alliance for Research on Cultural Heritage in Europe (ARCHE) is a three-year, EU-funded Horizon Europe project to develop a pan-European framework for a holistic approach to research and innovation in cultural heritage. The project consortium of 24 partners from 18 countries (including Germany) is led by the Fondation des Sciences du Patrimoine (France), and was initially formed in September 2022. The Rathgen-Forschungslabor (Rathgen Research Laboratory) of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin is the German project partner and is acting on behalf of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (SPK -Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation).

Through the formation of interdisciplinary expert advisory panels and through a series of workshops and assessments of the existing field and future challenges and developments, ARCHE will develop a strategic research and innovation agenda for cultural heritage and demonstrate the value that a research and innovation partnership focussed on cultural heritage could have for Europe.

Partnership Resilient Cultural Heritage

Resilient Cultural Heritage (RCH – PDF, 1.21 MB) is a European Commission (EC) proposal for a European Partnership under the Research & Innovation Cluster 2: Culture, Creativity and Inclusive Society. A European Partnership is funded primarily through Member State contributions, with supplementary funds from the EC. The aim of the RCH Partnership is twofold: to strengthen the means of preserving Europe's cultural heritage and to contribute to climate neutrality in other sectors by bringing forward traditional and innovative practices, techniques and materials resulting from cultural heritage research. The RCH is the first Partnership addressing cultural heritage to be approved under Cluster 2. The full Partnership proposal will be completed in spring 2024. Commitment for participation in the Partnership will be sought from Member States until the end of September 2024.

What is the relationship between ARCHE and RCH?

With ARCHE’s Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) currently in the drafting phase, ARCHE aims at paving the way for the future European Partnership Resilient Cultural Heritage (RCH).
