The frieze in the Vaterland Hall of our Neues Museum is peppered with scenes from the Norse Edda. From Baldur's death at the hands of his brother Hödur to the drinking society in Valhalla, everything is there. And it's no wonder, since the New Museum and thus the Vaterländische Saal were built in the mid-19th century. Shortly after Jacob Grimm translated the Edda into German and the empire was in search of a common and, at best, millennia-old identity.
