James Simon was not only an important art collector and successful entrepreneur. He wanted to give something back to society and founded numerous charitable organisations that helped the poorest people in the city. He was particularly concerned about child poverty, which was rampant during the imperial era, and so he founded the "Haus Kinderschutz" in Zehlendorf, a suburb of Berlin at the time, where he took in over 300 children to protect them from exploitation and abuse.
