James Simon founded the German Orient Society with a number of fellow campaigners and acquired numerous excavation licences in Ancient Egypt. He financed the excavation at Tell el-Armana in Egypt, the capital of Pharaoh Akhenaten. During this excavation, the now world-famous bust of Queen Nefertiti was discovered and Simon acquired it for his collection. But he also acquired the numerous artefacts from ancient Babylon, so that the Ishtar Gate could be reconstructed in Berlin after lying dormant in the ground for over 2000 years.
