As part of the Museumsinsel master plan, the Pergamonmuseum has been undergoing renovation in stages since 2013; the hall with the Pergamon Altar has been closed since autumn 2014 until probably 2019. With the support of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the Collection of Classical Antiquities of the National Museums in Berlin and the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research were able to realise an elaborate 3D scan of the more than 2,000-year-old masterpiece of Hellenistic art in September 2014. This resulted in the 3D model of the Pergamon Altar.
