This time Margaret Shortle shows us her personal favourite: "Young man from the Safavid era"
This interview was conducted as part of the exhibition “Welcome to DiverCity, Queer in Schöneberg and Elsewhere” at the Jugend Museum in Schöneberg. The Museum für Islamische Kunst contributed an object from its collection to this exhibition, which takes up the aspect of gender and/or sexuality in its epoch of origin. I chose the ‘Young Man from the Safavid Period’, a tile showing a graceful young man in a garden. As a handsome youth, he represented an object of desire, a visual presentation of the beloved, a common literary figure in Persian poetry.
