Provenance Research on the Neue Nationalgalerie’s 1905–1945 Collection Catalogue

As part of the reopening of the Neue Nationalgalerie and the opening of the Museums des 20. Jahrhunderts, the Nationalgalerie is compiling a collection catalogue covering the period from 1905 to 1945. The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s Zentralarchiv is overseeing the provenance research on this collection of works.

This project will investigate the origins of almost 500 Modernist paintings and sculptures created up until 1945, with a particular focus on individual works produced between 1933 and 1945. Researchers will also look at works that the Nationalgalerie acquired after 1945 in East and West Berlin, which means looking at the acquisition contexts of the Soviet Occupation Zone, the German Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany.
