Berliner Antike-Kolleg

Project to develop and evaluate methods of conducting serial photogrammetric surveys of archaeological cultural assets

As part of a project to develop and evaluate methods for the serial photogrammetric recording of archaeological cultural assets, initiated in the “Repositories – Editions – Materials” unit of the Berliner Antike-Kolleg and led by Prof. Dr. Markus Hilgert, methods of photogrammetrically recording archaeological cultural assets (in particular cuneiform tablets) are to be systematically tested and evaluated at the Vorderasiatisches Museum and compared with other 3D-digitalisation methods (especially stripe-light scanning and laser scanning) for their precision and potential for serial application.

It is of decisive importance that the 3D-models generated should have a texture which matches that of the original as faithfully as possible. Also to be investigated is the degree to which various material and surface qualities of the digital copies affect the quality of the digitalisation results. Central tasks of the pilot project are the design of a suitable method of testing, the development and evaluation of working procedures for photogrammetrically recording various types of object, the digitalisation and texturing of various small batches of objects, the documentation of the comparative trials, working procedures and the hardware and software used, as well as the formulation of generally applicable recommendations for the serial photogrammetric recording of archaeological cultural assets.
