Within the broader framework of the Museuminsel Master Plan, the Pergamonmuseum is undergoing a major refurbishment based on plans drawn up by the O.M. Ungers architecture firm. The reopening of the museum’s North Wing, which has been closed since 2013, is planned for the spring of 2027. At that time, the Pergamon Altar and the newly redesigned Museum für Islamische Kunst will once again be accessible to the public. The Vorderasiatisches Museum will display a selection of 60 collection highlights in the main hall of the North Wing in the exhibition Life on the Euphrates and Tigris. The reopening of the South Wing, which has been closed since 2023, is scheduled for 2037, with the new space set to house the Vorderasiatisches Museum across three floors.
During the closure period, the Vorderasiatisches Museum will be relocating special items from its collection as ambassadors to the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s sister museums and to other museums in Berlin. The first such item – a plaster cast of the Codex of Hammurabi – is already on display in the Münzkabinett (Bode-Museum). Plans for further special exhibitions are currently underway, as well as for the repurposing of the provisional Pergamonmuseum building known as “The Panorama”. Beginning in 2027, the exhibition Life on the Euphrates and Tigris will showcase 60 highlights from the collection of the Vorderasiatisches Museum.
