The Bode-Museum, your refuge: Neville Rowley – Maria with sleeping Jesus

Film

Seven of the Bode Museum's curators and restorers present their favourite objects and talk about difficulties they have experienced in their own lives. They explain how a work of art can help to overcome small and big crises; even those that seem insumortable.

Sometimes the crisis you go through seems so overwhelming that you don't believe you can overcome it. But perhaps it is just a misunderstanding, says Neville Rowley, the French art historian, and points at a portrait of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Andrea Mantegna painted Jesus as a baby. Many visitors think that Mary looks sad because her son is going to die at the age of 33. Well, says Neville Rowley, maybe it's just that the baby has been crying all night and Mary, the young mother, had to breastfeed him every five minutes. Now she is incredibly tired! Look at the black circles under her eyes!
