Museum Berggruen Is a Guest at the Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg

21.09.2022
Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg

While the Museum Berggruen is closed for major renovations that begin in autumn 2022, some of its works are on an exhibition tour starting in Japan and China. During this period, part of the collection remains accessible to Berlin audiences in an exhibition at the Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg from 21 September 2022 to 12 November 2023, including works by Giacometti, Picasso, Klee and Cézanne.

The Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg has made a room in its Stüler building available to its neighbour, the Museum Berggruen, so that a representative selection from its collection remains accessible to viewers in Berlin during the closure. Along with Alberto Giacometti’s Große Stehende Frau III (1960), ten other artworks by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Paul Cézanne are now on display, as are works by Paul Klee, whose art is already well-represented in the Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg. From 2013 to 2014, the Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg presented the large Klee exhibition, Les Klee du Paradis, with works from the Nationalgalerie collection normally exhibited at the Museum Berggruen and the Neue Nationalgalerie.

Museum Berggruen and Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg: Twin Buildings Across from Schloss Charlottenburg

In addition to the shared focus of their collections on Modern Art, the two institutions are also linked as an architectural ensemble. The nearly identical twin buildings, situated directly across from the palace Schloss Charlottenburg, were erected from 1851 to 1859 by Friedrich August Stüler for the royal Garde-du-Corps regiment. The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin has used the buildings as exhibition venues since the postwar period. Moreover, the Museum Berggruen and the Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg are both part of the Nationalgalerie.

Stations of the International Tour

The Museum Berggruen closed on 5 September 2022 so that its Stüler building can be completely refurbished by 2025. Some of the collection is about to begin an international tour under the title The Museum Berggruen/Nationalgalerie, Berlin Collection. From 8 October 2022 to 22 January 2023, 97 works will be shown at the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo, and from 4 February to 21 May 2023 at the National Museum of Art, Osaka. The tour continues from 2023 to early 2024 at the UCCA Edge (UCCA Center for Contemporary Art) in Shanghai and the UCCA in Peking. The Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris will host the collection starting in autumn 2024.
