Museum Berggruen: Exhibition Tour and Renovation of the Stülerbau Building until 2025

08.07.2022
Museum Berggruen

The Museum Berggruen is going on tour: The exhibition tour will bring important masterpieces by Picasso, Matisse, Cézanne and Klee to Japan, China and Paris. The building is closing for major renovations from 5 September 2022; reopening is scheduled for 2025.

The Museum Berggruen is going on the road with an exhibition tour: Starting in September, the majority of the works will travel to Japan, China and France, with further stops planned. From 5 September 2022, the Museum Berggruen will close for three years. During this time, an extensive restoration will take place. The works remaining in Berlin will be on view at other locations of the Nationalgalerie, in the city to keep the collection accessible there until the reopening scheduled for 2025. At the Charlottenburg site, the neighboring Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg featuring Surrealist art will remain open.

The exhibition tour of Museum Berggruen is a great opportunity to share the Berlin works with new audiences in a broader context and is a fitting example of the Nationalgalerie’s mission to be visible as an important collection of international significance.

International Tour of the Works from October 2022

Titled The Collection of Museum Berggruen / Nationalgalerie Berlin, an exhibition of selected works is travelling to Tokyo, Osaka, Shanghai and Beijing. It includes major works such as The Yellow Sweater (1939) and Large Reclining Nude (1942) by Pablo Picasso, Madame Cézanne (1885) by Paul Cézanne, and Nude Skipping Rope (1952) by Henri Matisse. In Tokyo and Osaka, 11 works from Japanese collections complemented the presentation. Since June 2023, the exhibition has been on display at the UCCA Edge in Shanghai, where the works are shown chronologically from 1885 to 1972. The collection travels in November 2023 to the UCCA in Beijing. As of fall 2024, the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris will host the guest presentation of works from the Museum Berggruen.

The exhibition tour offers the Museum Berggruen an international stage at venues outside Berlin, opening up different resonance spaces in each case: in Japan, interest in European modernism extends back to the first half of the 20th century; in China, only comparatively few original works of these art movements have been on view until now; and the final stop in Paris is the place of origin of a large number of these works.

Renovation of the Stülerbau from Fall 2022 to 2025

The “Stülerbau West”, the Museum Berggruen’s historic preservation building on the street side, is to be completely renovated beginning in fall 2022. The outer shell, in particular, is in urgent need of refurbishment. In addition to technical advances, the project will also improve visitor circulation and make the building barrier-free.

Comprehensive façade and roof renovations are to be accompanied by waterproofing measures carried out on the basement masonry. The technical systems necessary for the museum’s operation will be completely modernised. To achieve this, the building will be dismantled down to its shell. A special focus of the renovation is also accessibility, with the Hublift in the lobby area and the elevator cabin being renewed and a barrier-free guidance system being installed. The entrance will be made more attractive, the lighting situation thoroughly improved and the tour circulating on the second upper level completed. The museum’s reopening is planned for 2025.
