At the Stadtarchiv Würzburg, a new project is investigating how self-adhesive labels can be removed from historical book bindings without leaving residues. The aim is to develop a gentle procedure that prevents damage to the material. To this end, adhesives are being analyzed and various removal methods tested, using a collection of volumes from the former independent city of Heidingsfeld (16th–19th century).
The labels and adhesives cause material alterations, accelerated aging, and mechanical stress. Since the volumes contain unique council records with no duplicate tradition, their preservation is of particular importance. Their contents and provenance also make them significant beyond the region, especially for the history of Jewish life and economic developments in Lower Franconia.
