The use of in-situ generated nitrogen, which is produced on-site from ambient air, for integrated pest management was restricted by the EU Biocidal Products Regulation in 2012.
Through a complex process, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, led by the Rathgen-Forschungslabor, was able to submit an application for approval to the Federal Office for Chemicals of the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) on behalf of cultural heritage institutions in Germany in 2022. This application was approved in 2023. As a result, in-situ generated nitrogen can now be used again for pest management in Germany, and nitrogen chambers can be legally operated for the protection of cultural heritage.
