Green Museum and Climate-Friendly Culture: Environmental Management of Climate-Related Risks in Museums

The research project “Green Museum and Climate-Friendly Culture. Environmental Management of Climate-Related Risks in Museums” aims to prepare museums in Germany for climate change and the associated climate adaptation through effective measures. For this purpose, we collect national and international best practice examples that have already made their way to the “Green Museum”. The aim is to develop resource-saving strategies and concepts for the preventive conservation, safeguarding and preservation as well as the care of nationally valuable cultural heritage.

From the Survey to the Practical Guide

A key component of the project was a questionnaire through which museums were able to share their experiences with sustainability and climate protection. The responses provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of environmental management and climate-related measures within the German museum landscape.

The Practical Guide

The evaluation of the survey, together with the analysis of the best-practice examples, has been brought together in this practical guide. It is intended to serve as hands-on support for museums and to highlight ways in which they can position themselves sustainably, climate-resiliently, and with a view to the future. The practical guide (PDF, 7,3MB) is available as a free download.
