Vorderasiatisches Museum Bids Farewell with a Varied Programme of Events

On 22 October 2023, the Pergamonmuseum will open to visitors for the last time in the foreseeable future because of renovations. For this reason, the Vorderasiatisches Museum (Museum of the Ancient Near East), Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, presents a multifaceted programme of events from 30 September to 16 October 2023. Exceptional dance and music performances, concerts, a podcast event and an antiquity slam, are taking place against the spectacular backdrop of the Ishtar Gate.

  • Saturday, 30 September 2023, 8 pm (doors open at 7:30 pm)
    Disrupting Time: Queens against Borders (Performance Party)
    “Queens against Borders” is the first Performance Party in Berlin building solidarity for and by trans- and queer refugees from Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) living in Berlin.

  • Wednesday, 4 October 2023, 8 pm (doors open at 7:30 pm)
    Antiquity Slam: 10 Minutes in Front of the Ishtar Gate!
    The Berlin Antike-Kolleg is organising the 6th Antiquity Slam with the Vorderasiatisches Museum – a science slam all about ancient studies.

    The Staatsoper in Concert
    A horn quartet and a cello ensemble of current and former members of the children’s orchestra of the Staatsoper present a mutual concert programme with the children’s choir of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden.

    Notturno Extra: Stadt – Traum – Vision (City – Dream – Vision)
    The Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester (DSO) bids farewell to the Pergamonmuseum with a special concert in the Notturno series: a hit with the public – and not just for night owls. In what is now the 14th season, the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation) is opening its venues for the Notturno series, this time consisting of three chamber concerts by the DSO ensemble.
    There is an admission fee; the number of attendees is limited. Tickets are available for € 40.

    The Sound of Science: The Ishtar Gate of Babylon (Podcast Event)
    The tenth episode of the science podcast “Hinter den Dingen. 5000 Jahre Wissensgeschichte zum Mitnehmen und Nachhören” (The Story of Things: 5000 Years of Knowledge History to Take Along and Listen To), published by the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 980 “Episteme in Motion” at the Freie Universität Berlin. In collaboration with the Vorderasiatisches Museum, the CRC focuses on the Ishtar Gate and the Babylonian science of making lists. Participants listen to stories surrounding the famous gate directly before the original backdrop and let themselves be swept away into an ancient world of knowledge.
