The artist Sandra Mujinga talks in a conversation with the curator Anna-Catharina Gebbers about aspects of her work “Disruptive Pattern” (2018). Her video installation without sound on three flatscreens, which features the dancer Amie Mbye, is on view in the exhibition “Magical Soup. Media Art from the Nationalgalerie Collection, the Friedrich Christian Flick Collection im Hamburger Bahnhof and Loans“ (September 6, 2020 until Januar 3, 2021 at Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin).
Sandra Mujinga (born 1989 in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo) is a Norwegian artist and musician who lives and works in Berlin and Oslo. She studied at the Malmö Art Academy (Lund University) and at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. Recent solo exhibitions include Midnight, Vleeshal, Middelburg (2020), SONW – Shadow of New Worlds, Bergen Kunsthall (2019); Seasonal Pulses, Croy Nielsen, Vienna (2019); Hoarse Globules, UKS, Oslo (2018); and Calluses, Tranen, Copenhagen (2018). Music has the power to create imaginary worlds. Sounds can physically shake up rooms. And images can conjure up auditory spaces that draw us beyond canvases and screens:
“Magical Soup” explores the power and the magic with which images, sound, music, and language create, reveal or hide reality. The works range between precise observation, radical self-expression, and deliberate deconstruction of identity. The exploration of the relationship between (moving) image and sound range from media art pioneers through to a younger generation of artists: Nevin Aladağ, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Trisha Baga, Dineo Seshee Bopape, Stan Douglas, Cyprien Gaillard, Jochen Gerz, Douglas Gordon, Rodney Graham, Dmitry Gutov, Anne Imhof, Christine Sun Kim, Joan La Barbara, Sandra Mujinga, Nam June Paik, Charlemagne Palestine, Ulrike Rosenbach, Pipilotti Rist, Lawrence Weiner, Nicole Wermers, Keiichi Tanaami, Diana Thater, Sung Tieu, David Zink Yi.
