The web portal cdfriedrich.de provides viewers with an in-depth online experience of 250 works by the German Romantic artist. The site was realised in a cooperation between museums in Hamburg, Berlin and Dresden as part of the Culture Data Space digital project, funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
Around 250 works by Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840) are now accessible via the web portal cdfriedrich.de. The digital site assembles the artist’s most important paintings and drawings from the collections at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. Because some paintings are too fragile to travel and the drawings too sensitive to light to be exhibited for long periods, this digital presentation provides the only all-round experience possible.
The portal offers various avenues through which viewers can get closer to Friedrich’s art: The chronicle provides a comprehensive overview, shortcuts succinctly explore Friedrich’s subjects from today’s perspective, and in the Digital Stories section, users can delve into individual works and learn more about the artist’s views based on topical questions. It is the first cooperation of its kind to date between the museums, taking place within the scope of the “Culture Data Space” digital project as one of several pioneering projects in the German government’s digital strategy. The impetus came from Caspar David Friedrich’s 250th birthday celebration in 2024 and the three related anniversary exhibitions in Hamburg, Berlin and Dresden, enhanced on cdfriedrich.de. The web portal will continue to be developed throughout the 2024 anniversary year.
Marking the 250th birthday of Caspar David Friedrich, the Alte Nationalgalerie, in cooperation with the Kupferstichkabinett (Prints and Drawings Museum) ‒ Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, has co-organised “Caspar David Friedrich: Infinite Landscapes” (19 April ‒ 4 August 2024), presenting the first major exhibition on the oeuvre of German Romanticism’s most important painter. Some 60 paintings and 50 drawings from Germany and abroad will be on view, including world-renowned icons. During the anniversary year in 2024, the Berlin presentation is part of a series of thematically independent exhibitions at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. The exhibition series is taking place under the patronage of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
