UNESCO World Heritage Day is taking place throughout Germany on Sunday, 4 June 2023, under the motto “Our World. Our Heritage. Our Responsibility.” In cooperation with the German UNESCO Commission and the association UNESCO-Welterbestätten Deutschland e.V., this year’s programme addressing sustainability issues is hosted by 51 World Heritage sites in Germany. The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin is participating, offering a number of Tours About the Museumsinsel Berlin.

Public Tours of the Museumsinsel Berlin’s World Heritage

The Museumsinsel Berlin has had UNESCO World Heritage status since 1999. It unites five outstanding 19th and 20th-century museum buildings and the newly erected James-Simon-Galerie into a one-of-a-kind ensemble. The tours provide insights into the history of “Museum Island” and its architecture. Highlights of the Museumsinsel Collections can also be explored with free admission as part of the Museumssonntag (Museum Sunday) programme.

The Museumsinsel’s Inclusion on the UNESCO List

The Museumsinsel Berlin has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site for more than 20 years. Its placement on the World Heritage List was signed on 4 December 1999, and on 10 March 2000, then Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, celebrated the event officially. Today, the ensemble – composed of the Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Bode-Museum, Pergamonmuseum and the James-Simon-Galerie – is one of the main cultural attractions in Germany, drawing approximately 2.5 million visitors per year.
