On Tuesday, 1 November 2022, the Alte Nationalgalerie, including the Impressionist Hall, opens to the public as usual.

On Sunday, 30 October 2022, at approximately 3:50 pm, an individual in the “Impressionist Hall” threw a red liquid at the protectively glazed painting Clown by Henri de Touluse-Latrec and the nearby wall covering and then glued their hand to the wall next to the artwork. Prior to this they had distributed leaflets in the hall. Museum security personnel rapidly reported the incident to the police, who were able to quickly detach the person from the wall and take them into custody.

No other persons or works were affected. At this point, no information is available about the damage to the work and frame, both of which are being examined in the museum’s restoration workshop. The Impressionist Hall was closed immediately after the incident; the museum remained open until the regular closing time of 6 pm.
