“Nan Goldin. This Will Not End Well”: Late Night Exhibition Finale

25.03.2025
Neue Nationalgalerie

The special exhibition Nan Goldin. This Will Not End Well at the Neue Nationalgalerie closes on 6 April 2025 with a lecture by architect Hala Wardé. Due to high demand, a late-night programme on two evenings ‒ 4 and 5 April 2025, from 8 pm to midnight ‒ accompanies the exhibition’s finale at the Neue Nationalgalerie with extended opening hours, reduced admission and a cash bar. Even on Sunday, 6 April, the opening hours of the exhibition have been extended from 10 am to 8 pm.

The Exhibition Tour

The retrospective of Nan Goldin (b. 1953 in Washington, DC), now on view in the upper hall at the Neue Nationalgalerie, is the first to provide extensive insights into the American artist’s oeuvre from 1980 to the present. Goldin’s individual series of works presented in slide shows and films are shown in pavilions designed by Hala Wardé – and each of these “buildings” is conceived in relation to the respective series of works; together, they form a type of village. Shown previously at venues in Stockholm and Amsterdam, the exhibition will travel after Berlin to Milan (Pirelli Hangar Bicocca, 9 October 2025 – 15 February 2026) and Paris (Réunion des musées nationaux – Grand Palais, March – September 2026).

The Works

The exhibition includes the following works:

  • Goldin’s major work, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1981–2022);
  • The Other Side (1992–2021), a historical portrait paying homage to the artist’s trans friends, whom she photographed from 1972 to 2010;
  • Sisters, Saints and Sibyls (2004–2022), an attestation about family trauma and suicide;
  • Fire Leap (2010–2022), an excursion into the world of children;
  • Memory Lost (2019–2021), a claustrophobic trip through drug withdrawal;
  • and Sirens (2019–2020), a trip into drug-induced ecstasy.

Late Night: Extended Opening Hours and Bar on 4‒5 April 2025

On two evenings, Friday, 4 April, and Saturday, 5 April 2025, the exhibition is open four hours longer than usual, from 8 pm to midnight. During this period, reduced-price 8-euro tickets are available online and at museum ticket counters. Some waiting time at the entrance can be expected due to the extended length of some of the works shown.

The Goldin Variations: An Architectural Recital by Hala Wardé

For the third venue (Berlin) of Nan Goldin’s exhibition tour, architect Hala Wardé (b. 1965 in Beirut) has designed a unique dialogue between the architectural structures showcasing the artist’s works and Mies van der Rohe’s iconic building. This dialogue goes beyond the Neue Nationalgalerie and develops the vision of a new urbanity in which the city represents itself and is represented.

In a public lecture, Hala Wardé talks about her collaboration with Nan Goldin, the art of mise-en-scène and dialogue – with other architectural structures, cities and landscapes – and the relationship between architecture and music.

The special event is conducted in English at 6:15 pm. Participation is free, but seating is limited. No advance registration is required. Please note that the exhibition officially closes on 6 April 2025 at 8 pm.
