Lotte Laserstein's best work, the large-scale painting entitled 'Abend über Potsdam' ('Evening over Potsdam') dating from 1930, took its place as an enriching new addition to the National Gallery's collection on 5 October 2010.
The brilliant acquisition means that the magnificent collection of high modernist art has been enhanced by a work of a female painter, whose art and relevance has only been rediscovered in the last few years.
The acquisition of Lotte Laserstein's 'Abend über Potsdam' was made possible thanks to joint financial backing from the Kulturstiftung der Länder (a nationwide cultural foundation), the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation, the Berlin division of the National Lottery Foundation, the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media and personal support from Wolfgang Wittrock.
The painting was successfully acquired for the National Gallery at an auction at Sotheby's in London on 2 June 2010.
