A Day in Greenery: The Kulturforum Gardens Programme on 4 September 2022

23.08.2022
Kulturforum

On Sunday, 4 September 2022, from 10 am to 10 pm, the institutions at the Kulturforum are opening their gardens and green spaces to visitors as part of the Kultursommerfestival (Summer Cultural Festival). The Gemäldegalerie (Old Master Paintings), Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings), Kunstbibliothek (Art Library), Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Decorative Arts), Neue Nationalgalerie, Staatliche Institut für Musikforschung (National Institute for Music Research), Berliner Philharmonie, Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Berlin State Library) and the church St Matthäus are featuring Till Brönner, the Deep Gold Band, the Vokalhelden, the Karajan-Akademie, Arnold Dreyblatt and Felix von Manteuffel, among others.

At first glance, Berlin’s Kulturforum does not appear to be one of the green oases in the city. Nevertheless, this prominent architectural ensemble, which was once considered a green bridge to the Tiergarten, features five still little-known gardens:

  • The “Philharmonischer Garten” (Philharmonic Garden) of the Philharmonie and the Staatliche Institut für Musikforschung,
  • the Staatsbibliothek’s “Lesegarten” (Reading Garden),
  • the “Skulpturengarten” (Sculpture Garden) at the Neue Nationalgalerie,
  • the interior garden at the Kunstgewerbemuseum,
  • and the Matthäikirchplatz, the square in front of the church St Matthäus.

As part of Berlin’s Kultursommerfestival, the gardens will open on Museum Sunday with Free Admission for concerts, performances, readings, tours, church services and an outdoor table under the open sky. The programme is augmented with offers at the Kunstbibliothek, Gemäldegalerie and Kupferstichkabinett (programme flyer: Ein Tag im Grünen am Kulturforum am 4. September 2022, PDF, 97 KB, German only). All of the venues provide barrier-free access. It’s a unique opportunity to get to know the Kulturforum from its green side – free of charge and also free of cars.

A cooperation of the Kulturforum and neighbouring institutions. The Kultursommerfestival is part of DRAUSSENSTADT and is supported by Kulturprojekte Berlin.
