The first in a series of solo exhibitions from the Friedrich Christian Flick Collection, Urs Fischer presents a rampant, rollicking topography, an enchanted melting pot of sculptures, installations and pictures. With an installation conceived especially for the Rieckhallen and the garden outside, the Zurich-born, internationally acclaimed artist Urs Fischer presents a body of work spanning the past decade of his artistic production which, as a pluralistic whole, can be considered a work of art in its own right. An artist renowned for his affectionate, yet incisive treatment of quotidian objects and materials, Urs Fischer is perpetually engaged in the interrogation and visualisation of process and contingency. Drawing viewers into an artistic universe characterised by a playful and bitingly humorous defamiliarisation of the world as we know it, Urs Fischer brings us face to face with a frequently erotic phantasmagoria of waste, of dissolution, decay and deformation as well as the beauty of transience and the emergence of the new. We see apple and pear halves cuddled together in moribund, rotting unity, alongside lascivious waxen beauties patiently flirting with oblivion while they melt the works' metamorphosis becomes a vital part of their genesis.
Urs Fischer has had solo exhibitions in a number of significant art institutions including the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, Kunsthaus Zürich, Zurich, the Stedelijk Museum and Amsterdam. His installations and sculptures have also been shown in numerous internationally esteemed group exhibitions and biennales. At the same time as the Berlin exhibition, an extensive group of Fischer's works will be on show at the newly opened Istituto die Ciechi Via Vivaio, Milan.
With a selection of some 50 works of art, Fischer's first major solo exhibition in Berlin offers an insight into the project of one of the most exciting young artists working today. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated booklet in German and English.
