„Subterranean life,” „Earth Pain”, or „Spatial Concept: Nature” by Jean Dubuffet, Roberto Matta, or Lucio Fontana—these and other works are the focus of the exhibition in the Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg. They all revolve around the theme of the organic and vegetal.

Many of them were created in connection with times of crisis, whether in the 1930s or the late 1940s and early 1950s. None depict a human; viewers perceive only undefined beings at best. What grows and flourishes here seems to have come into being by itself.

„Plants Breaking through the Earth” is an exhibition about the secret life of nature, which usually closes itself off far from view and only occasionally appears in the magic mirror of art.
