An exhibition of the Stiftung Moritzburg, Halle (Moritzburg Foundation Halle) and the Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery)
In Max Beckmann's work, Minna Beckmann-Tube appears in manifold ways and guises. It is to her that the dedication found in many of his pictures refers: 'MBSL' - Max Beckmann seiner Liebsten (Max Beckmann to his dearest) or 'HBSL' - Herr Beckmann seiner Liebsten (Herr Beckmann to his dearest).
The exhibition at the Old National Gallery is dedicated to the relationship of the couple Max Beckmann und Minna Beckmann-Tube. It focuses on Beckmann's early work with 'Small Death Scene' of 1906 and 'Conversation I' of 1908. Special attention is paid to the years 1904 to 1915 during which Beckmann was active in Berlin in the environs of the Secession. But Minna Beckmann-Tube, too, appears as an artist in the exhibition.
Beckmann does not only see Minna's striking appearance but places her on the stage of his 'world theatre', thus coming closer to the enigmatic bond between man and woman. In his pictures, Beckmann portrays situations as parables of events. The figures - some closer contacts, some more removed - appear as characters in masquerades, roles attributed to them by the painter who sees himself as a player in the very game he depicts.
The exhibition in Halle and Berlin is kindly and generously supported by the Beckmann family.
