Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart
The Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart - Berlin was opened in 1996 to accommodate both the Marx Collection and the Nationalgalerie's own collection of contemporary art. Although the museum looks back on a number of significant exhibitions, there have been relatively few acquisitions made since its establishment. Hence, it was something of an event this spring that the Hamburger Bahnhof, specifically the Nationalgalerie, was afforded the chance of purchasing a selection of new works. Concurrent with the new presentation of the returning Marx Collection, the group of recently acquired works by Janet Cardiff/George Bures Miller, Thomas Demand, Johannes Kahrs, Astrid Klein, Via Lewandowski, Michael Majerus, Chris Newman, Daniel Pflumm, Corinne Wasmuht und Michael Wesely is currently on show on the first floor of the east wing of the main building.
The exhibition can be thought of as a snapshot documenting an ongoing process within one exhibition space. Here individual positions are assembled side by side for the moment, although they will later need to assert themselves and find their place within the existing collection. The new acquisitions are a reflection of the most recent developments in art history and are presented here for consideration and discussion.
