Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart
To mark Berlin Art Week 2024 (11 – 15 September 2024) Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart is presenting a multifaceted sound festival as well as performances and talks.
The sound festival takes place at various sites at Hamburger Bahnhof, including its museum garden, Historical Hall, Forum, and Rieckhallen. The festival’s point of departure is the Hamburger Bahnhof collection and current exhibitions, which feature numerous artists exploring the boundaries between music and art. The sound programme also builds on the interdisciplinary approach the museum has pursued since its founding.
Which connections exist between art and sound? Which artistic interpretations of sound can be discovered in contemporary art? The tour takes the works of Naama Tsabar as a starting point for an exploration of the museum by way of its acoustic works.
In her Installation Palimpsest (2024), Andrea Pichl scrutinises the building complex. Palimpsest symbolises the constant overwriting of history that has also characterised the Detlev-Rohwedder-Haus (Detlev Rohwedder House) and will continue to do so.
In Marianna Simnett’s solo exhibition WINNER at Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, the most passionate moments of football are restaged and radically transformed through the element of dance. A chorus of baby ultra fans presides over the action while chanting from the stands. Their refrain is interpreted vocally by Lydia Lunch, icon of the punk/postpunk/no wave scene. Lydia Lunch is performing live in Hamburger Bahnhof during Berlin Art Week.
On two evenings, 12 and 14 September, visitors can see and hear concerts by artist Naama Tsabar. In conjunction with her solo exhibition Estuaries in Hamburger Bahnhof’s Kleihueshalle, she activates her works together with musicians and performers by playing instruments, singing and moving.
The collection presentation Nationalgalerie. A Collection for the 21st Century at Hamburger Bahnhof presents a polyphonic panorama of the Berlin art scene and the city itself, from the threshold of the fall of the Berlin Wall to the present day. Curators Catherine Nichols and Sven Beckstette discuss the interplay between art and music using audio examples by Joseph Beuys, Isa Genzken, Klaus Killisch, Martin Kippenberger, Emeka Ogboh, and Wolfgang Tillmans, among others.
The artists Susan Philipsz, Valentijn Goethals and Prem Krishnamurthy discuss the relationship between space and sound. (in English)
Artist Jeremy Shaw converses with co-director Sam Bardaouil about his work Phase Shifting Index, 2020, which is part of the new collection presentation Museum in Motion: A Collection for the 21st Century.
Artist Jelena Fužinato, who was born in Yugoslavia and comes from Bosnia, is developing an alternative entrance to the museum for Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart as part of Berlin Art Week.
The performance is part of the series Zoom Out: Contemporary Perspectives on the Threshold of the Museum, conceived by WEITWINKEL – Global Perspectives on Collections.
The programme takes place as part of Berlin Art Week.
Die Berlin Art Week is a project of Kulturprojekte Berlin.
