Hamburger Bahnhof and the Bundeskunstsammlung Announce Close Strategic Partnership

11.07.2024
Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart

Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart and the Sammlung zeitgenössischer Kunst der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (the Federal Republic of Germany’s contemporary art collection) announce an important strategic partnership and closer cooperation in the future. This decision and a corresponding cooperation agreement were reached by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media together with the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation), of which Hamburger Bahnhof is a part.

This partnership is intended to increase the visibility of the Bundeskunstsammlung and strengthen its connection with the work of Hamburger Bahnhof. Hamburger Bahnhof is taking on curatorial responsibility for the Bundeskunstsammlung and will oversee its further development. Artworks from the Bundeskunstsammlung, which does not currently have its own venue, will regularly be incorporated into the Hamburger Bahnhof’s exhibition programme.

The Bundeskunstsammlung

The Sammlung zeitgenössischer Kunst der Bundesrepublik Deutschland was founded by Chancellor Willy Brandt in 1970. Today, it comprises over 2,100 artworks and serves as an outstanding testament to the development of contemporary art in the Federal Republic of Germany. The works are acquired based on recommendations from an independent acquisition committee appointed by the Minister of State. These works are available in Germany and internationally as gratis loans and are regularly requested by museums and large exhibition venues for exhibitions or as long-term loans.
